Timing is everything. Not since 2002 have a group of artists, this talented and recognized, with each specializing in the rock and roll poster genre, shown in Los Angeles. With the common thread of music as the glue, each artist represented will showcase their unique and assorted array of work, detail and collection of bands and cities.

Coachella to Comic-con, these artists have fans in all places. Their prints, toy runs, and originals sell out. Their rare pieces fetch nice profits on ebay AND at auction houses. Even a signing at a sneaker retailer during a hurricane could cause a riot.

Bios:

PNE (Jermaine Rogers, EMEK, Justin Hampton)Post Neo Explosionism is a movement founded by three giants of rock poster art: Justin Hampton, Emek and Jermaine Rogers. They have come together in an unprecedented union of talents that began with a group showing of their works in Seattle in the fall of 2002 at the famed Showbox Theater. Here, the seeds of PNE were sown. The now-historic two-night showing of their works included performances from numerous bands that played in their honor including solo sets from Doug Martch from Built To Spill and Dave Mercer from The Shins. The immense display of over ten thousand square feet of rock posters and music was greeted with a massive turnout and outstanding reviews.

Hampton, Emek and Rogers each have been working in the field since the early ’90s. Though relatively young, they have over 30 years of professional experience between them. Collectively, they own over 2500 images that have been used in work for a who’s who of rock and music ICONS. Each artist brings his own significant fan base to the table. Like the Impressionists of the late 19th century, PNE realized that there was strength in numbers: they could make a real mark together as a united front. They draw upon many artistic influences, especially those of the Explosionists. Melding high-impact imagery with solid content, the Explosionists were known for their works of controversy. Decades later, the Neo-Explosionists continued this tradition, taking it a step further by creating new mediums for their work to flourish.www.pne3.com.com

Tara McPherson is an artist based out of New York City. Creating art about people and their odd ways, her characters seem to exude an idealized innocence with a glimpse of hard earned wisdom in their eyes. Recalling many issues from childhood and good old life experience, she creates images that are thought provoking and seductive. People and their relationships are a central theme throughout her work.

Tara exhibits her paintings and serigraphs in fine art galleries all over the world. Named the crown princess of poster art by ELLE Magazine, she has created numerous gig posters for rock bands such as Beck, Modest Mouse, and The Melvins. Her array of art also includes creating toys with companies like Kidrobot, Dark Horse, and Toy2R, painted comics and covers for DC Vertigo, advertising and editorial illustrations for companies such as Widen+Kennedy and Spin Magazine, and teaching a class at Parsons in NYC.

McPherson’s art has been included in books such as Lost Constellations; The Art of Tara McPherson Vol II (Dark Horse), Lonely Heart: The Art of Tara McPherson (Dark Horse), Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall (DC), The Art of Modern Rock (Chronicle), Illusive 2, Illustration Now! (Taschen), SWAG and SWAG 2 (Abrams), and more. Her art has also been featured in the Oscar Award winning film Juno.

Tara was born in San Francisco in 1976 and raised in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from Art Center in Pasadena, CA in August 2001 with honors in Illustration and a minor in Fine Art.www.taramcpherson.com

Cole Gerst/Option-G is an artist, illustrator, designer and animator based in the Mount Washington area of LA. He is the founder and art director of option-g visual communication. Gerst began his career in the music business and continues to design cd covers and posters for such bands as The Shins, Modest Mouse, Beck, Elliot Smith and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
While still painting and designing, Gerst has branched out into directing and animation. His “Yung Yeti” cartoon airs on the Sundance Channel later this year and a pilot for another network is in the works. To top it off Gerst has two monthly comics in the LA Weekly, “The Good Life City” and “LaLa Land”.

In his spare time you can find Cole tearing up the hills of LA on his 1978 Puch Free Spirit or hanging with his 2 German Shepherds.http://www.option-g.com

ZOLTRON is an enigma. A self proclaimed 70’s teen idol, Zoltron’s wave hairdo and unique California accent epitomized a certain level of cool, which inevitably paved the way to his success as a graphic designer, poster and street artist, pseudo- photographer and vinyl sticker aficionado. Zoltron is the founder and creative director of the self-titled design company as well as the notorious silkscreen sticker printing company, Sticker Robot. Zoltron’s artwork has been shown across the country, has been published in national and international magazines and was once called “Pretty Heavy” by a transient who was urinating on a dumpster as Zoltron walked by.http://stickerobot.comhttp://zoltron.com

DAVE HUNTER is an Alumni of The California College of the Arts in Oakland and the Center for Electronic Arts San Francisco, Dave Hunter has been involved in the Bay Area rock art/music scene for 23 years. Hunter first surrounded himself in the company of Rock Posters and the legendary Fillmore/Avalon Ballroom artists who created them while organizing and installing Rock Poster shows at the Psychedelic Shop and Artist Rights benefits in San Francisco beginning in 1986. Dave went on to to work in the Bill Graham Archives and was in charge of framing and installing poster art at The Fillmore, The Warfield and Shoreline Ampitheater music venues.
From these Rock Art rich backgrounds Dave began to design and produce rock art for Bay Area Bands, Record Labels and Venues. Eventually getting back to his roots in printmaking, Hunter has created hand silkscreened posters for the likes of Metallica, Sly & The Family Stone, Gov’t Mule, The Decemberists, Throbbing Gristle and Les Claypool – some of which are featured in the new Goldenvoice San Francisco poster series. Hampton and Grant's Grimm Recollections and more

Justin Hampton Newsletter

New releases comin' at cha!...

After much adieu I'm pleased to finally announce 'Grimm Recollections: A Modern Retelling of the Grimm Fairytales'. The concept was developed by myself and New York writer Andrea Grant; also known as the 'Pin-Up Poet'. Our collaboration is a retelling of classic fairytales with a modern, twisted slant in a collaboration of 12 illustrated poems. Each peice consists of 2 limited edition prints per story released simultaneously.

Andrea and I met in New York City in September of 2005 at a Neil Gaiman 'Save CBGB's' reading the day after my showing with PNE (Post Neo Explosionism) at the CBGB 313 Gallery. We quickly realized we shared a very similar aesthetic and began scheming a creation to sink our creative teeth into. Our version of the stories are set in modern day New York City and reflect the cultural diversity and tone of the greatest urban landscape in the world while maintaining the essence of the original tales. The stories are designed in a classic fairytale book format and will read side to side as though turning the pages in a tome that you can walk through. Presented for your consideration is the first of the series;

Coming soon...'Grimm Recollections' with Andrea Grant

As part of my East Coast trip I also spent a week in NYC working out the last details of my latest and most ambitious project to date. This has been in the works for quite some time now and I'm very pleased to finally announce it. 'Grimm Recollections: A Modern Retelling of the Grimm Fairytales'. The concept was developed by myself and New York writer Andrea Grant; also known as the 'Pin-Up Poet'. Our collaboration is a retelling of classic fairytales with a modern, twisted slant in a collaboration of 12 illustrated poems. This will consist of 3 limited edition prints per story released simultaneously. The series will launch in March 2009.

Andrea and I met in New York City in September of 2005 at a Neil Gaiman 'Save CBGB's' reading the day after my showing with PNE(Post Neo Explosionism) at the CBGB 313 Gallery. We quickly realized we shared a very similar aesthetic and began scheming a creation to sink our creative teeth into. In our version of the stories, which are set in New York, the wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood' is a barfly who hangs out on the Bowery, Hansel and Gretel are sugar-addicted kids from Brooklyn who tear off the tops of fire hydrants in summer, and the 'Twelve Dancing Princesses' live in a penthouse on Park Avenue, imprisoned by a father who resents the fact that he has no sons. Look for more news very soon as well as a preview.

See the link below for more of Andrea's work.

Pop artist, Justin Hampton rocks ‘Manifest Hope: DC’ exhibition.

For Immediate Release:
February 2, 2009
Portland, OR

Famed Pop Artist: Justin Hampton, was a guest artist at the 'Manifest Hope: DC' official Inaugural Art Exhibition. Celebrating the art of the Obama campaign. His work was displayed with Shepard Fairey, Ron English, David Choe to name a few of the A-List artists.

Yosi Sergant of Evolutionary Media Group invited Hampton to take part in this history defining exhibit after seeing Justin's political poster 'That One: History', which Justin independently designed to show his support of the Obama presidential campaign.

“My painting is a riff on the infamous cover I designed for the controversial 2004 ‘Grey Album’ by the super producer Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley fame. Not only did I put Obama and historical figures in place of Jay-Z and The Beatles, but I tied together 150 years of American Freedom Fighters in one image” Explains Hampton. This image was seen on every major news channel covering the event.

Justin Hampton is a world renowned pop artist and is known as one of the leaders in the modern Rock N’ Roll poster movement. His work has been published in many books including the definitive tome of the gig poster genre; The Art of Modern Rock. Hampton has been creating rock art for the past 15 years and his posters are highly sought after by collectors. He is the definitive artist for the rock band Queens of the Stone Age for whom he has created classic imagery since 2002. His posters have also appeared in various television shows and motion pictures.

Hampton hits the ground running

I just got back in town to Portland, Oregon last night after 2 weeks on the road. I spent one week in Washington DC for the Inauguration art exhibit 'Manifest Hope:DC' where I had a painting on display along side Shepard Fairey, Ron English, David Choe and countless others. It was an amazing event celebrating the art of the Obama campaign and his historic Inauguration. The 4 day event was incredible! The closing party was a blast, there were countless celebrities including Rosario Dawson who Emceed the event and musical guests De La Soul, Santogold and Moby. I then spent a week in NYC having meetings and seeing friends. Now it's back to work and I've got tons of it to get to. More very soon...
